Mirage
Mirage is an exhibition bringing together eleven artworks by my grandfather and four of my own. Shortly after his passing I began creating a series of charcoal drawings in his studio. These works were indirectly inspired by his presence, his lessons and the artworks that still surrounded me at the time. My four drawings became reflections, or mirages, of the process I went through after his death and of the teachings he had passed on to me over the years.
Op een berg is the first work, a visual capturing of what the house and its surroundings meant to both him and me. Druivelaar portrays myself as a ruin within a dead vineyard, reflecting the moments when I too felt as though I was falling apart. Vrouwelijk Schoon may at first seem unrelated to a series about loss, yet it was born from his advice: if you truly wish to draw something, first study and master its form before placing it on canvas. Finally, Starend in de holte in de storm emerged in one of my most vulnerable moments in the studio. It depicts me staring into the storm that my life had become, a drawing born out of the desire to explode and forget everything that had just happened.
This exhibition was organized in collaboration with Art Café Barlaban in Roeselare.
