Blindsight

Blindsight is my second installation using picture tubes, developed with a technology I created that combines processing and CRT. The project was realized in collaboration with Kaufang Na Nakhon, Francesco Feccia, Siyu Wang and Emmy Valckenier.

The starting point was the sound of spaces, also known as reverberations. Our research revealed that a small percentage of blind people are able to perceive space through these reverbs. After recording a range of echoes throughout the building, we integrated them into software that allowed live voice recordings to be played back with the captured reverbs.

By using sliders, the echo of one room could be transformed into that of another, effectively shifting the acoustic qualities of the space. The installation was set in a darkened room where, depending on the slider settings, the environment continuously shifted to new auditory perspectives. When visitors produced sound in the dark space, a projection appeared, offering a suggestive image of the recorded environments.

In this way, Blindsight allows participants to experience the world as it might be perceived by a blind person—through sound, resonance and imagination rather than sight.
